About the Organization
Symbrosia is a Hawaiʻi-based cleantech aquaculture startup using the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis to reduce methane emissions from livestock. Our feed additive, SeaGraze®, has been shown to cut methane by over 80%.
Fellowship Description:
We are seeking a passionate Microbiology Intern to support our R&D efforts focused on microbial identification and microbial-assisted crop enhancement. This intern will assist with bacterial plating, DNA extraction, and microbiome research aimed at improving aquaculture performance.
Responsibilities:
Conduct bacterial culturing and colony identification using plating techniques
Perform DNA extraction from microbial samples for downstream applications
Assist with data collection and analysis related to microbial community dynamics
Support research on microbial biofertilizers and crop enhancement
Maintain lab records, protocols, and proper sample documentation
Contribute to literature reviews and project summaries
Qualifications:
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science, or related field
Experience with bacterial culturing and aseptic technique
Familiarity with DNA extraction protocols (e.g., kit-based or manual methods)
Interest in sustainable agriculture and microbial applications in crop production
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently in a lab setting and follow safety protocols
Time Commitment: 30 hours / week
