About the organization:

Symbrosia is a Hawaiʻi-based cleantech aquaculture startup using the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis to reduce methane emissions from livestock. Our feed additive, SeaGraze®, has been shown to cut methane by over 80%.

Fellowship Description:

We’re looking for a passionate GIS Mapping Intern to support both (1) the restoration efforts of Asparagopsis taxiformis (Limu Kohu) gametophyte outplanting in Hawaiʻi, and (2) the identification of ideal Aspargopsis taxiformis farm locations in Brazil. The intern will work closely with our Research Scientist to map potential sites in GIS, analyze environmental ocean data, and work with community groups to support implementation.


Responsibilities:
Compile and integrate oceanographic and fresh water spatial data for multiple global locations
Conduct geospatial analysis using GIS tools to support the Hawaiʻi restoration and Brazil projects
Identify specific regions near Florianopólis, Brazil, that are ideal for seaweed farming
Analyze spatial data to inform an experimental design for the outplanting of Limu Kohu in Hawaiʻi
Collaborate with researchers, restoration specialists, and community groups to integrate spatial data into project workflows
Assist in compiling reports and presentations by providing maps and spatial data visualizations
Help research and incorporate new GIS tools or data sources


Qualifications:

Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, Marine Science, Biology, Ecology, or a related field
Proficiency in GIS; experience with R or Python is a plus
Familiarity with spatial data formats (shapefiles, GeoJSON, rasters) and geodatabases
Strong attention to detail and ability to perform data cleaning and quality assurance
Good communication skills to present spatial data findings effectively, both visually and verbally
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented research or project environment
Interest in environmental conservation, oceanography, and GIS applications


Time Commitment:  30 hours / week
